Scars and Souvenirs

Theory of a Deadman’s third album “Scars and Souvenirs” is a good outing for the band, but it’s not exactly going to bring them critical claim. Like it or not their sound is very similar to Nickelback’s. I don’t think it’s necessarily intentional (even though they are on Kroeger’s label), I just think that’s how they sound. Tyler Connelly’s voice is similar to Kroeger’s in a lot of aspects and a lot of the harmonies that Theory does are similar to what Nickelback does. That being said, I actually like Connelly’s voice more than Kroeger’s. His delivery is convincing and aggressive, it never feels like he’s pushing anything. Connelly’s voice and guitarist Dave Brenner’s lines are Theory’s strongpoint, and they always have been. The best thing about “Scars and Souvenirs” is that those two elements are pushed the most and thus shine the most. The songs on Scars really play to those two strengths, whether it’s the catchy ballads “Not Meant to Be” and “End of the Summer” or the dark and crass “Hate My Life.” Overall the set on “Scars and Souvenirs” comes close to matching the band’s debut album. I don’t think it beats it, but it does come a lot closer than “Gasoline” did. The album is about two or three songs too long. “Little Smirk” talks about Connelly’s character stealing his girlfriend’s car with her kid still in the backseat and is a little too dark for me, and then “Sacrifice” just isn’t a good track. It feels incomplete and should have been held over for another album. Overall Theory’s latest is a decent collection of tracks, and while it has it’s faults, it’s still the best Theory album we’ve seen in five years.
