Flogging Molly

When you’re a band like Flogging Molly you’ve already got a bit of a handicapped against you due to the fact that a majority of the population sees your music as seasonal, not seasonal like Christmas music, but seasonal like St. Patrick’s Day music, you get a day a year, a week at best where you’ll get a lot of attention and then after that, you’re a band with a cool Irish sound. Is it possible for a band with such a cultural sound to break into a mainstream market? I don’t know. But what I do know is that Flogging Molly is as good of a band as there is out right now. Their entry on the P.S. I Love You soundtrack was one of the best entries and the band’s new album “Float”, as a whole, is pretty outstanding. The Irish sound is prevalent throughout, but not only does it make their music a little seasonal, it makes their music disctinct- which is never a bad thing. Some tracks for you to check out from “Float”, “Requiem for a Dying Song”, “You Won’t Make a Fool Out of Me”, “From the Back of a Broken Dream”, “Man With No Country”, and “The Story So Far.” Instrumentation is great, and the vocal work by Dave King is awesome. Part of the greatness in Irish music is the sincerity and the passion and King fits in with that perfectly. You probably won’t want to listen to this album every day for the rest of your life, but you will want to check it out once a year on March 17th and that’s more than you can say for most bands and most releases.
