Green Day frontman Billie Joe Armstrong recently shared a cover of “Police On My Back” as part of his “No Fun Mondays” lockdown cover series. “Police On My Back” was a track from The Equals’ 1968 album Explosion before The Clash made it more popular by covering it on their 1980 album Sandinista! “This was originally written and performed by The Equals, Eddy Grant’s beat group from the 60s,” says Armstrong. “And of course The Clash slay it.” Armstrong previously announced plans to release a cover song every week until “we’re let back out into the world.” Armstrong has previously covered Billy Bragg’s “A New England,” “You Can’t Put Your Arms Around a Memory,” a 1978 solo single by late New York Dolls lead guitarist Johnny Thunders, and John Lennon’s protest song “Gimme Some Truth.” Green Day were scheduled to be out on the road in support of their latest album Father of All Motherf**kers, but like almost all other acts they had to cancel their trek due to the coronavirus pandemic.
