Echosmith: Now Part of the Cool Kids

Image

Alternative Addiction recently chatted with Echosmith's Sydney Sierota about their recent collaborations and an upcoming release.

In 2013, a group of teenage siblings took over speakers across the country with a song that was intensely relatable by seemingly everyone who heard it. The Sierota siblings, better known as Echosmith, took over music in 2012/2013 with “Cool Kids.” They sold the song 1.2 million times in the U.S. alone to be certified triple-platinum. Even now, the song has been streamed on Spotify almost 323 million times. The group, led by vocalist Sydney Sierota has done some amazing things, but one thing they haven’t done is properly follow up their album, Talking Dreams with a sophomore LP. They released in EP in 2017 called Inside a Dream, but it didn’t quite earn the same reaction. That said, Echosmith is currently hard in the studio working on what will hopefully be a full-length follow up. What’s new with the band is that they’ve been releasing some cool collaborative singles. They did a feature on a song with for KING & COUNTRY and Timbaland called “God Only Knows” and they also released a song with EDM artist Audien.

“Working with For King and Country was really enjoyable. It was very easy,” said Sydney Sierota when talking to Alternative Addiction recently. “The whole thing came together really quickly. We had some mutual friends with Joel from the band and his wife. His wife grew up in Chino, California – where we’re from. She had known my dad and they had stayed in touch. Then her and Joel came over and were talking to my dad about what was going on. They brought up this Timbaland remix and they were looking for someone to feature on it. My dad texted me quickly and of course I was into it. Hearing the Timbaland remix put me over the edge. The original song was great but hearing the Timbaland remix really put it over the edge for me. It felt even more important to hear this new spin on it and to have someone who is so respected be involved with it. It was a great experience; I didn’t even meet the guys from the band until we were shooting the video for the song at their show a few weeks ago. It was a virtual experience, but it was fun and really easy.”

The band also released a song earlier in the year with Audien called “Favorite Sound.” It was song that the Sierotas had written for Echosmith that wasn’t going to see the light of day until the band was looking for a song to specifically work with Audien on.

“That was a song that we had written, and we had it in mind for our album. But we couldn’t quite get it right musically and we weren’t sure what to do with it. Then the collaboration with Audien came up and we heard that he was into it. We sent him the song and he turned it into something cool. He created a track very quickly. I remember hearing it for the first time and thinking it was perfect. It was an easy collaboration too – it doesn’t always happen that like that – but that’s how it happened.”

“The song (Favorite Sound) was really important to me because it’s very personal. It was one of the more personal songs that I’ve written lyrically in a long time. I really wanted it to do something and when we weren’t sure if it was going to go on the album, I was bummed because the message is so important to me. I feel like it’s relatable; there’s so much going on in your head. It can be overwhelming. It’s important to take control of your thoughts. You have to make it a point to listen to your thoughts and take control of them.”

With the two collaborations, Echosmith is immediately doing something different. It’s not that big of a stretch from the band’s last EP Inside a Dream but it’s still a decent step away from the band’s two biggest singles, “Cool Kids” and “Bright.”

“We’ve been really intentional about being open musically,” said Sydney about the two features and the current sound of the music they’re putting out right now. “All of these things we’ve put out recently have been collaborations, so that automatically makes them different. We really wanted to be open to working with anyone and everyone and doing things that people wouldn’t expect. It’s been interesting to see people’s reactions because they seem to be loving it. I’m glad people are liking the different flavors of what we can do. We’re working in the studio now, and this music we’ve been working on… it feels like the same band but older and more evolved. I’m excited with how everything is sounding right now. It sounds like us, but more grown up; like we’ve lived a couple of years of life since we put out the last one. It’s been nice to show different sides of us, but we still want to be true to what everyone loved us for in the beginning.”

Next up for Echosmith is a new release, that’s what the band is in the studio working on right now.

“The music is basically done. The bulk of the album is being mixed right now. It’s in the final stages. We’re going to release songs before the album comes out to get people excited. The goal is to figure out when those 3-4 songs can come out. We want to get people music as soon as possible. We’ll have a lot more news for people very soon. The music is pretty much there, so that means we can move forward. We want to make sure this album is exactly what we want to be.”- aa
