Denver, CO
Summit Music Hall
By: Jason Bullinger
Awolnation wrapped up a two-night, sold-out run at the
Summit Music Hall this past Friday night in Denver, CO. The group is
currently on tour supporting their 2011 album, Megalithic
Symphony. Fronted by Aaron Bruno, the band features
keyboardist Kenny Carkeet, drummer Hayden Scott, and lead guitarist
Drew Stewart. The group was in excellent form on Friday as they
ripped through their set of electronic-dance, hip hop, beat-influenced
rock. Opening up for Awolnation during this current road trip are
up-and-comers Imagine Dragons and rapper Zeale. All three sets were
solid on Friday.
Zeale from Austin, TX was backed by a drummer and
DJ. He pumped up the audience with his blend of indie hip-hop rap. He
just released his EP, Wake Hell Or Make Peace
featuring Bruno and had the shortest set of the night but still made an
impact.
On the heels of generating a lot of buzz from their newly released full
length album Night Visions, Las Vegas’ Imagine
Dragons is led by Dan Reynolds. Reynolds and his bandmates – guitarist
Wayne Sermon, bassist Ben McKee, and drummer Daniel Platzman inspirited
the crowd with their brand of indie dance pop-rock. Dan kept up the
energy by raising his arm throughout the set and by joining his band on
songs by adding tribal beats on his upright bass drum in spots. The
crowd was very animated during "On Top of the World." Their big radio
hit "It's Time" was a highlight as they invited a seven year old named
"JD" onstage to help sing the chorus. The group’s reputation of putting
on a great show appears to be well-earned as they put on a great show
Friday night.
For Awolnation, Bruno kept the attendees energized from the beginning
bouncing all over the stage with outreached hands into the crowd. During
the third song, "Wake Up" Bruno wasted no time as he jumped into the
crowd and surfed before returning to the stage. Awolnation made their
way through most of their debut playing notables such as "Not Your
Fault" and "Kill Your Heroes" and "Jump On My Shoulders." The best part
of the show clearly was the sing-along to Awol’s smash single "Sail".
The crowd went crazy - fist pumping, clapping, and cheering. The show
ended with the epic "Knights of Shame." By the end of the song, the
crowd began cheering and chanting AWOL AWOL clearly wanting more.
All-in-all, the three acts put on a great show. This current run for
Awolnation, Imagine Dragons, and Zeale will come to a close on October
25th in Lake Buena Vista, Florida. After that, Awolnation will perform
at Voodoo Music Experience in New Orleans with the likes of Green Day,
Skrillix, and Neil Young.
