Jack Durney, the mayor of Hoquiam, Washington, has announced that April 10 will be celebrated as Nirvana Day. On the same day, the legendary grunge rockers will be inaugurated into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
"I just think we need to recognize accomplishments by a band that has spoken to a different generation than mine, certainly, but it's well-known throughout the world," Durney said.
"He and Krist [Novoselic], the entire Nirvana band, have accomplished a great deal. They should be honored, and we should be proud of them.”
Nirvana were originally from Aberdeen, which is next to Hoquiam. For his part, Kurt Cobain grew up in Aberdeen, but lived in Hoquiam for a short period of time.
Fans can catch the band's induction into the HOF on HBO in May.
