New Book Now, New Music Soon for Blink’s Tom DeLonge

Blink 182’s Tom DeLonge called it an ADD moment. He had the idea to write a children’s book about an astronaut who is alone on the moon and so one afternoon he sat down with an illustrator and out came a new book titled, The Lonely Astronaut on Christmas Eve.

It’s not likely going to unseat Fifty Shades of Gray as a New York Times bestseller, but it’s off to a good start.

DeLonge told Mike Jones of DC101 that the limited edition hardcover (1,000 copies) has already sold out but fans can still buy the soft-bound copy (includes digital download) if they go to Angels&Airwaves.com or AVAshop.com.

That’s good news for Rady Children's Hospital because the proceeds from the book will benefit the hospital.

Publishing the book wasn’t much of a stretch since DeLonge owns some businesses that are tied to production and publishing.

“When I started Angels & Airways, I said ‘how do we create a studio that can do a record with a feature film with a novel and a graphic novel,’” DeLong said. “You’ll be hearing about what Angels and Airways is doing, there are some really, really big things so it’s very easy to kind of naturally extend that to a children’s book.”

The book tells the story of a rocketeer alone on the moon on a cold Christmas night, and the gift he receives from a few unexpected (and extraterrestrial) friends.

“The guy that illustrated the book (Mike Henry) is my illustrator that’s doing a bunch of the animations for the films we have coming up for Angels and Airways,” DeLonge said, “I said ‘hey I want to write a book called Lonely Astronaut. I just said it, didn’t even think it through. I thought that was kind of cool a little astronaut sitting on the moon, what would that be like? I sat down one afternoon and went to work on it and the next thing you know we have something.”

While DeLonge enjoys life as an author it won’t be long before he’s back with Blink 182 recording new music. DeLonge said he expects to have a new record out by the end of 2014.

“We’re still trying to figure out how all of us meet up in the same spot and where that’s going to be. We have a guy in London, one north of Los Angeles and myself in San Diego. I think once we actually figure out that location things will move fairly quickly. Everyone’s excited. The fans are excited so I’m expecting great things.”
